An Indian conglomerate, Tata Teleservices Limited (TTSL) is a major part of the magnanimous Tata Group of Companies. The name given to it in various telecom circles of India is Tata Indicom. The other counter parts of the company are Tata Teleservices Maharashtra Limited and Tata Communications Ltd. In the beginning of the year 2009, the company set its foot into the CDMA technology targeting towards the youth of the country in a joint venture with Virgin. As an interesting fact, Tata Indicom and Virgin Mobile are competitors in various parts of the country.

Tata Teleservices has over 87 companies with over 2.8 million shareholders and more than 3,30,000 employees. The company Hughes Telecom (India) Limited has been renamed as Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) Limited as it has been acquired by the TTSL group in the year 2002. Tata Teleservices has created a Pan India Presence with an investment of approximately 20,000 Crores across 20 centers in the country including Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Chennai, Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Mumbai etc.

Tata Indicom pioneers the CDMA 3Glx technology in India. In partnership with Ericsson, Lucent, Motorola and ECI Telecom for the deployment of the telecom network, Tata Teleservices has now established 3G ready telecom infrastructure. The leads the market in the fixed wireless telephony with a customer base of more than 3.8 million.

In March 2008, Tata Indicom has crosses the landmark of 24 million subscribers in the wireless category along with an overall subscriber base of more than 25 million. In terms of market share in Delhi NCR region, Tata Indicom is at the No.2 slot with a subscriber base of 3 million. Tata Indicom offers both its services in the Pre-Paid as well as Post-Paid category with multiple tariff plans along with innumerous value added services.

The various services included in the Tata Teleservices are mobile services, public booth telephones, wireless desktop phones and wireless desktop phones. Some of the other services include value added services like roaming, voice portal, post- paid internet services, 3- way conferencing, Wi-Fi internet, data cards, USB modem, group calling, enterprise services, etc. Lately, the company has launched a number of products like prepaid wireless desktop phones, voice portal, polyphonic ringtones, new mobile handsets, new voice and data services, interactive applications like cricket, news, astrology, etc.

Tata Indicom runs a special Rural Telephony program wherein it appoints and trains people to visit the villages on cycles or two wheelers at fixed times and days of the week where they sell recharge coupons, servicing equipments, etc, running across 200 to 300 customers. Thus Tata Indicom maintains a rural distribution network. For this purpose, the company has joined hands with Tata Chemicals and Tata Kisaan Sansar to disseminate information through these centers.
